Altered statement detection

Catch an edited statement before you fund

Editing a PDF leaves traces. Underly checks every PDF statement for them on upload, rates each one from Integrity OK to High risk and reconciles the balances, so a changed amount shows as a break.

How it works

What each statement is checked for

Producing software
Whether the PDF was made by a PDF library or an HTML-to-PDF tool rather than exported by a bank.
Incremental saves
Whether the file was saved again after it was first written.
Timestamps
A modification date earlier than the creation date, or either date in the future.
Metadata
Missing metadata, and files that can't be read at all.
Rating
The share of checks that raise a concern sets the rating: Integrity OK, Low risk, Concerning or High risk.
Balances
Opening balance plus credits minus debits has to equal the printed closing balance. A break, transactions outside the statement period or an opening that doesn't follow the last close are flagged.

FAQ

Common questions

Does High risk mean the statement is fake?

No. It means the file shows signs of editing worth a closer look, such as being saved again after export. Ask the merchant for statements downloaded straight from the bank.

Are CSV and Excel statements checked?

Their balances are reconciled like any statement. The file checks need a PDF, so spreadsheets don't get an integrity rating.

What does Balances not printed mean?

The statement doesn't print an opening or closing balance, so there's nothing to reconcile against.
