Fake bank statement checker
Check a bank statement for re-saves, edited text, pasted-in amounts and AI-made images before you fund or submit it. It runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
PDF, JPG or PNG. The file stays on your computer.
What each check looks for
- Re-saved or edited
- PDF editors and re-saves, such as Acrobat, Foxit, Preview or Print to PDF, leave their name in the file, and Acrobat marks every text change it makes. A bank's statement system names itself.
- Browser or generator
- A statement printed from a web page, or built in code with a library like ReportLab the way ChatGPT and statement generators make PDFs, carries that tool's name.
- Edits after export
- Changes saved on top of a PDF are added to the end of the file. The check counts those saves and names the pages they changed.
- Added text
- An amount typed over the original usually arrives in a font the rest of the page doesn't use, or as a second copy of a font the file already had.
- Timestamps
- A file last changed before it was created, or dated in the future, has had its dates altered.
- AI image labels
- Images made by OpenAI and some other generators carry a signed label saying they were made with AI. The checker reads it when it's there.
FAQ
Statement checker questions
Is my file uploaded?
No. The checks run in your browser, and neither the file nor anything read from it is sent anywhere.
Can it tell if a statement was made with AI?
It catches the common routes: a PDF built in code with a library like ReportLab, the way ChatGPT makes statements, a web page printed to PDF, an image labelled as made with AI, and pages that are only pictures. A made-up statement also has to keep every balance consistent, and the numbers check in Underly tests that.
Why is a re-saved file worth a look?
Opening a statement in a PDF editor and saving it replaces the bank's file with a copy. Often that's innocent, like a merchant printing to PDF, but a copy can carry changes, so it's worth asking for the original.
Does nothing found mean the statement is genuine?
It means none of these checks found a sign of editing. A careful forger can make a file that passes them, which is why the numbers check reads the transactions themselves.
What does the numbers check add?
Underly reads every transaction and checks it against the statement: the lines must add up to the printed closing balance, fall inside the statement period and match the printed lowest balance.
